2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment. Still, women fight everyday for their voices and talents to be heard. Powerful female politicians, activists and athletes continue to press important issues to the forefront of conversation. Yet, it is so interesting to hear a woman “talk about routes”. Why? In 2020 is it still so interesting, Cam to hear a woman speak about a topic which is deemed solely for men. Why is it so interesting for a woman to wear pants on the senate floor in 1993? There remains a language almost coded that suggests women are to dress and focus their interests according to what is considered “feminine”. Why is it so difficult for women to be paid according to their position and talents? As Megan Rapinoe, an outspoken forward for the championship winning US Women’s Soccer Team, put it, we are to “listen more and talk less”. It is then and only then that change is made possible. So, Dear Sports, and dear sports media when will we elevate women to the same status as their male counterparts?
